A very scarce and unique volume of sketches and paintings done during a six month tour two women undertook to the Holy Land in 1895.This beautiful and charming volume contains twenty-three and painted watercolours and seven pencil sketches of scenery and botany.The compilers of this volume, simply initialed S. E. B. and M. J. B. to the front paste down, set on out this exciting journey from the 8th March to 5th August in 1895.Throughout the volume, to the verso of each leaf, is pasted newspaper clippings from an article named 'Two Ladies in Palestine' by William Paley Baildon. Baildon was a barrister, fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and editor of 'The Home Counties Magazine' from 1906-1912. The letters in the article are from S. E. B. and M. J. B. sent to William during their travels. These two women were related to William, perhaps his sisters, daughters, or nieces.Ink to the front paste down, 'Letters from palestine Illustrated, S. E. B. M. J. B.', and in pencil to the recto to the front endpaper. In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Crack to the front joints. This work is the account of the author's travels through the Middle East, following the Biblical footsteps across the desert for forty days, as the Israelites followed Moses leading them out of Egypt. Written and illustrated by William Henry Bartlett. Bartlett was an illustrator who travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, Europe, America, and the Balkans. During this travels he wrote travel works which he also illustrated. He is best known for his drawings which had been rendered into steel engravings, making sepia wash drawings to the exact sized to be engraved, mostly landscapes. Some of Bartlett's other works include 'American Scenery', 'Canadian Scenery', and 'History of the United States of North America. With one folding map, twenty-five plates, and seventeen in-text engravings.
